In the previous Substack article, An Easy Exercise to Catapult Your Book Sales, we ran though an easy way for you to identify categories for your book or potential book by navigating Amazon. What if I told you there was a tool out there that would help you to do research on the categories and keywords for your book that was easier to use, less time-consuming, AND got you more up to date information?
Today is your lucky day!
We try to provide you with time-saving and reasonably priced tools that we ourselves have used and find useful. We have said time and time again that book marketing tools and services are for sale and there are plenty of businesses out there that ready to take your money. We could never vet them or try them all but when we come across something that is so integral to book marketing AND reasonably priced, we are going to share it with you.
In this post, I explain the use of a powerful tool for YOU to discover the profitable keywords and categories to sell you book. The owner of the tool Publisher Rocket is offering a Black Friday deal that runs through the 30th.
Here is the deal in case you are already sold and want to purchase it - come back and reason on, though, because I explain how it works below.
With the $97 purchase of Publisher Rocket Software you also get, for FREE, the video lessons Mastering Keywords and Categories (a 49.99 savings). The video lessons, which I have watched, and the publisher rocket tool, which I have purchased, are perfect together to help you identify the keywords and categories that will get your book seen and sold. They not only help with Amazon Category and keyword selection, they help with all of your book marketing efforts and are a great lesson for you in how books are ranked on Amazon as well as how people search to find books.
Analysis of the products in the Black Friday deal and how you can use them.
The owner and creator of Publisher Rocket, Dave Chesson, has written books, recorded podcasts and created products to help authors market (and even self-publish) their books. Kindlepreneur is Mr Chesson’s site and we have used it again and again. We have found his book marketing and publishing content to be generous, well-researched and accurate. We have linked to him already in our popular substack post on Distributors and Aggregators.
Publisher Rocket Tool
A while back, I was doing some research on keywords and categories on Amazon and I stumbled upon the tool that Mr Chesson created: Publisher Rocket. I bought it over the summer and at the time Mr. Chesson ran a special for his Mastering KeyWords and Categories Class (online) for free with purchase of Publisher Rocket - as in his Black Friday Deal.
In this post, I want to explain what Publisher Rocket is so that YOU can decide if it is worthwhile for you to purchase. I will also share information about the Mastering KeyWords and Categories Class and share why I think it is a great class (especially for free with this deal) and how for authors - published or self-published - it is a must learn!
Publisher Rocket is a software tool. It is like any other app that you purchase and pop on your desktop, like Excel or Word. It sits on your computer and you open it when you want to use it.
Let’s put a tack in Publisher Rocket Software for a second and we will come back to it.
Your Book’s Keywords & Categories
When you decide to write and market your book there a few things that you need to know about your book. We talked a bit about this with our post on message, audience, and hook. We have said that identifying message, audience, and hook will be pivotal in creating the media kit items to promote your book. They absolutely ARE pivotal. But there a few other things you need to identify about your book in order for it to be seen and sold on the online platforms that are available today and where your book will surely be offered for sale.
Categories and Keywords Identification is Crucial
Specifically, you need to know your book’s keywords and categories. You need to know/decide where your book belongs on “the shelf” of a library, bookstore, or online bookstore, such as Amazon.
What categories should be associated with your book?
To determine where your book belongs, you need to research the words (or phrases) that book buyers are using to search for books like yours. We call these words Keywords.
On a very practical level, you (or your publisher) will DECIDE on your book’s categories (think: genres). As well, keywords and keyword phrases (7 of them) will need to be entered to your book’s information on its setup on Amazon. Other online bookstores will ask for keyword information, too, so the analysis is worthwhile.
Research is Powerful No Matter HOW you Publish Your Book
If you are self-publishing, you have to enter this keyword and category information for your book with online aggregators and distributors. For those with a traditional publisher, the publisher will decide the keywords and categories to associate with your book but there is nothing stopping you from doing your own research to determine what YOU think are the best categories and keywords for your book.
One Practical Example why Categories and KeyWords are important
In 2009, when a traditional publisher published my first book, It Gets Easier and other Lies We Tell new Mothers, they picked “Pregnancy & Childbirth” as one of the categories for the book on Amazon. (The publisher added keywords as well but I do not know what they are) Just last week, on 11.22.2022, the audiobook version of the book was released and take a look at the picture… it was ranked #1 in the Pregnancy & Childbirth category for audiobooks on launch day. See that little red badge under the stars?
Picking the right categories (and keywords) for your book is critical for it to be seen and sold. The audiobook, because it had the right keywords and is in the right categories was ranked #1, a badge that will last forever… The publisher can call this audiobook “a #1 ranked book on Amazon” forever! Do you see how powerful and worthwhile this research is?
Mastering Keywords and Categories Lessons
So, to determine keywords and categories for my new book publishing September 2023, Get Your Book Seen and Sold: A Book Marketing and Publishing Guide I first watched The Mastering Keywords and Categories lessons to do my research.
Mastering Keywords and Categories Classes are briefish online videos hosted by the owner, Dave Chesson. There are three videos for Keywords and three videos for Categories.
Here is what you will come away with after watching the Mastering Categories and Keywords Class videos:
Understanding of Amazon and how it ranks & promotes books
The definition of Keyword & Category and why you need to identify them
HOW come up with Keywords & Categories
How to USE Keywords & Categories (Where and How to place them)
Once you understand Keywords & Categories, you can use the Publisher Rocket Software to do your research to IDENTIFY Keywords and Categories. Kindlepreneur provides excellent tutorials on how to use Publisher Rocket and several ways to ask questions if you have them. Again, the categories and keywords you discover through your research will be added to your Amazon Book information as well as be used for other online websites where you decide to sell your book.
Identifying YOUR Book’s Keywords and Categories is Empowering
It is so fun and empowering to research the keywords and categories to attach to your book and/or ebook. So much in book marketing and promotion seems like a shot in the dark. Although there are no guarantees, completing the easy analysis by using the Publisher Rocket software feels like I have a bit more control over the process and I better understand how it works. Although the Publisher Rocket software focuses and uses data from Amazon, the category and research can be used on whatever platform you place your books.
