Tidbits & Tidings: Writers Market Book, Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, Preview of John Kremer: Issue #7
A great book marketing resource and a way to jumpstart your creativity
Tidbits & Tidings: Issue #7
How’s your second week of January going? I hope you are having a great and productive book marketing week.
Writer’s Market, 100th Edition - Affordable Resource
I had a chance to dig into my copy of the tome, the Writer’s Market, 100th hundredth edition. This resource is chock full of information about book publishing and marketing. I am so glad that I bought it. You can always get a copy from the library but it’s much more fun to be able to dog year or put sticky notes on the pages you want to check out in detail later. Not only does the book list literary agents and publishers with all their great an gory details, it also lists magazines and trade publications so you can pitch articles and story ideas to them. There are tips on query writing and detailed information about the book industry in general – navigating contracts, prices, and resources. I am completely geeking out on it.
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris - Shake off that funk with a Movie
Next time you are in a funk for creative ways to market your book, try watching a movie. The character Don Draper, in Mad Men, a spectacularly successful Ad Creative Director, would sometimes sneak away from the office in the middle of the day and go to the movies. He said that watching movies gave him ideas.
I was feeling a little January-funkish and flipped the tv channels the other night to the Golden Globes . An actress, Leslie Manville, was up for best actress in the movie, comedy or musical category titled, Mrs Harris Goes to Paris.
One of the best reasons to watch the Golden Globes is to find out what movies are actually out there. I had never even heard of half the movies. I decided to watch Mrs. Harris goes to Paris on Peacock where it plays for free.
Cute movie. It is a period piece after set in the 50s. Mrs. Harris is a war widow and has a dream to purchase a Christian Dior dress in Paris. It tells the story of the way Christian Dior designs operated in the 50s in Paris and how they changed their business model to reach the “every woman” and to stay in business. It also tells the story of Mrs. Harris. (Two stories in one makes for a much more interesting movie and book.) Yes, Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris was first a book by Paul Gallico! If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Paul Gallico also wrote The Poseidon Adventure - I wrote about that book and later movie in this previous substack post. It’s a sign! Of what, I have no idea. Perhaps this year will reveal the reason. Paul Gallico originally released the book, Mrs Harris Goes To Paris in 1958. It was re-released in July 2022 and was made into a movie that released in 2022. Books are awesome… the marketing of them, the re-releasing of them, the way their messages resonate well after the year they publish.
Another terrific theme in the movie was Mrs Harris’s pursuit of her dream - one of my favorite themes as subscribers already know and new subscribers will learn. If your dream is to get your message or story out there to write a book, go for it like Mrs. Harris did - it could change your life.
Funk has vanished!
